Welcome to Chandigarh
Chandigarh, derives its name from a temple Chandi Mandir in the vicinity of the site selected for the city (deity Chandi, goddess of power), and a fort beyond the temple, called Chandigarh. Chandigarh is a Union Territory administered by the Government of India. Chandigarh is the capital of two North Indian States i.e. Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh has become synonymous with a certain kind architecture, alongwith planned landscaping, which is not found in other cities of India. Chandigarh is the city that is strongly loved by the people for the quality of life that it continues to provide.
After the partition of India in 1947, the former British province of Punjab was also split between east Punjab in India and west Punjab in Pakistan. The Indian Punjab required a new capital city to replace Lahore, which became part of Pakistan during the partition. So, the government carved out Chandigarh of nearly 50 Puadhi speaking villages of the then state of East Punjab, India.
In the north Indian state of Punjab.
