Imphal,The Capital City of Manipur
Imphal is the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. It is a small and beautiful picturesque city. It lies in the Valley of Manipur River and is surrounded by the northeastern hills and vast plains of India's. It is also the cultural capital of Manipur because there are many traditional festivals and cultural shows take place here at regular intervals. The city is also handling the modern commerce for the state of Manipur as being one of the most visited parts of the state of Manipur. Various products of Manipuri origin like that of household industries, woven goods, brassware, and bronzeware, are collected from different parts of the state and marketed here in Imphal. Agricultural and electronics industries are also one of the main parts of Imphal's economy. Aprt from this, the colourful costumes of the local people, joyous and familiar behaviour makes it a wonderful experience to visit this city again and again.
The history of Imphal mostly tells the stories of unceasing revolutions, blood battles and the trilas and tributions of social activities like Irom Sharmila to free Manipur from the clutches of armed forces. Although not much is known about pre-historic Imphal, the city came into limelight after the first Anglo-Manipuri war in the year 1891. This checkered history or the city was further influenced by the battle of Imphal during World War II. The British rulers upgraded this region into an important military base to evade invasion from the bordering countries. Since then, Imphal has served as an important military centre that is maintained by the Indian Army.
Imphal is a most beautiful tourist destination in the state of Manipur. There are many forts, temples, gardens, museums and chruches in Imphal. It is well connected with the major cities of the country through air, rail and road. There are many places to visit in Imphal are INA Memorial, Kangla, Moirang, Khwariamband Bazar, Andro, Bir Titkendrajit Park, Loktak Lake, War cementries and many others.
Places to visit
Loktak Lake is one of the most beautiful Lake located in Imphal. The lake is spread over an area of 286 sq km and is located at a height of 768.5 m. This lake is also called the Floating Lake because of various heterogeneous bodies of vegetation, soil and organic matters, which can be found floating in different states of decomposition.
Andro is a must visit place located towards the east of Imphal and is popularly known for its pottery. This village is home to the Andro Gramshang Museum, which comprises different varieties of traditional pots namely, Pudond Makhong, Walom, Ngangkha and Yukhum.
Khwariamband Bazar is a most famous market of Imphal. This market is unique as it has only women shopkeepers. There are around 3,000 shops which are owned and run by Manipuri women.
Moirang is a nice place to visit in Imphal which is famous for its history as well as cultural festivals. It is a small village from where the great freedom fighter, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose started his struggle and hoisted the flag on 14th April,1944.
