the commercial capital of India, the city is home to some of India's largest corporate houses. The city of Mumbai was earlier
called Bombay and it lies on the Konkan coast. It is a major hub of industrial and commercial activities that contribute to around
70 % of India's capital trade and investments. Mumbai tourism has procured a place on global map due to the Hindi Film Industry
which is popularly known as 'Bollywood'.
History
The word Mumbai is derived from Mumbadevi, the patron goddess of the Koli fisherfolk, the oldest inhabitants of Mumbai. The name Mumbai, in its final form, dates back to the 18 th century. For Portuguese, the name Bombay is Good Bay (Bom Bay Good Bay). Mumbai is a cluster of seven islands. These islands of no great value were ceded to Portuguese in 1534 by the Sultan of Gujarat. The Portuguese in turn given these islands to Englands's Chareless II as part of the wedding dowry of Catherine of Braganza when she married Englands's Charles II in 1661. In 1668, the British government leased the islands to the East India Company for 10 pounds per annum in the form of gold and Mumbai grew gradually to become centre of trade.

Places to visit
Marine Drive
Marine Drive is a skilfully laid-out boulevard, stretching along the coastline of Arabian Sea located in South Mumbai. It is built in an inverted C shape and 3 km long concrete road which connects the Nariman Point to Malabar Hills. This boulevard is popular as a sunset point among people, especially travellers.
Juhu Beach
Juhu Beach is one of the largest and most popular beaches in Mumbai. It is 6 kms long and is ringed by Arabian sea on the west. The beach is most famous for its street-side food like Pani Puri, Sev Puri, Pav Bhaji and more. In the evenings, the beach is crowded by people intending to see the beautiful sun, setting at the horizon of Arabian Sea.
Siddhivinayak Temple
Siddhivinayak Temple is one of the most famous temple which is located in Mumbai. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
The temple is known by names like Navasala Pavanara Ganapati, Navasacha Ganapati among tourists.
There are large number of devotees come from all over the country to get the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
Gateway Of India
Gateway of India is a major tourist attraction in Mumbai. It is a national heritage building in India that is located at the waterfront in Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai, facing Arabian Sea. The gateway is built from reinforced concrete and yellow basalt andepitomises the combination of Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture.
Haji Ali Dargah
Haji Ali Dargah is a most popular mosque located in Mumbai. The structure of this dargah symbolises Indo-Islamic style of architecture. It was constructed in 1431, in the memory of a Muslim merchant, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. This holy shrine is visited by over 40,000 people on all days, particularly Thursdays and Fridays.
