Introduction 
Pondicherry is a city which lies sunsoaked on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in Tamil Nadu state. Pondicherry is beautiful hangover, not from French wine but from a French colonial past. It is the regional capital and largest city in the territory. It is affectionately known as Pondy, and has been officially known by the alternative name Puducherry since 2006. The town of Pondicherry is located about 162 kms south of Chennai. The main languages spoken in the region include Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Apart from this, English and French are the other languages spoken by local people. The city of Pondicherry is the capital of the Union Territory of India. Pondicherry tourism is held together strongly by its architecture, mosques, churches, culture and food. Puducherry is most popular due to its French connection. It is known as the French Riviera of the East, Pondicherry is unique for its number of influences that have shaped its culture. The French were present for centuries, but the Danish, the English, the Portuguese and the Dutch have all stopped by, giving rise to a heady mix of European flavours allied with the local Tamil culture.

History 
Pondicherry is a Union Territory of India. It is a former French colony, consisting of four non-contiguous enclaves, or districts, and named for the largest, Pondicherry. In September 2006, the territory changed its official name from Pondicherry to the vernacular original, Puducherry, which means New village in the Tamil language. The territory is called Puducherry in Tamil, or Pondicherry in French. Pondicherry traces its origin to Saint Agasthya, the revered sage of the south. The excavations near Pondicherry reveal, that a Roman settlement existed here, 2000 years ago. It was also the site of many a battle between the British and the French, and was the capital of French India, before it attained its independence. This restored, attractive, former French colony, exudes a Mediterranean aura with its chic streets, elegant houses, ornamental gardens and the Hotel de Ville. Being a small and quiet enclave of Tamil Nadu, it has imbibed the Tamilian culture.

Apart from this, the city has numerous attractive places and sightseeing, which makes it an ideal tourist spot for travellers.

Places to visit 

Auroville
Auroville City is situated at a distance of 8 kms from the main town of Pondicherry. It is considered to be a City of Dawn. It lies on the East Coast Road and was founded by Mirra Richard in 1968. This city was designed by the French architect Roger Anger with the purpose of achieving human unity.

Matrimandir
Matrimandir is a must visit place located 8 kms away from the city of Pondicherry. It is a place for individual silent concentration and is situated in the centre of Auroville city. The architecture of Matrimandir can be defined as a 12 sided white marble inner chamber with a 70 centimetre optical glass globe in the centre.

Pondicherry Museum
Pondicherry museum is one of the most famous museum in Pondicherry. The museum houses some splendid collections of statuettes and is situated in the Bharathi Park. This beautiful museum has an exceptional gallery with sculptures in Pondicherry. The museum houses extensive remains of archaeological findings.

French War Memorial
French War Memorial is also a nice place to visit in Pondicherry. It was built in the year of 1971 and is dedicated to those soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country during World War I. The French War Memorial is beautifully illuminated on the Bastille Day which is celebrated on 14th July every year.

Promenade Beach
Promenade Beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beach located in Pondicherry.The beach remains crowded with visitors enjoying sports activities like volleyball and swimming during the evening. Waterscape, ocean spray and myriad reaction of people make the beach an attractive destination of Pondicherry.
