Udaipur,City of Lakes
Udaipur is a city located in Rajasthan in western India. Udaipur is also the centre for performing arts, crafts and its famed miniature paintings.
Udai Singh founded Udaipur in 1559 AD. According to a legend, Maharana Udai Singh was guided by a holy man meditating on the hill near Pichola Lake to establish his capital on that place. this place was surrounded by forests and lakes and was less vulnerable. Maharana Udai Singh died in 1572 and was succeeded by Maharana Pratap who defended Udaipur from Mughal attacks. Maharana Pratap is the most revered Rajput icon who bracely fought with the Mughals at the battle of Haldighati in 1576. Mewar continuously defied foreign invaders and has a history of bloody battles until the British intervention in the nineteenth century when a treaty was signed to protect Udaipur. After independence Udaipur merged with the union of India.
Places to visit
Jag Mandir is an island in Lake Pichola which is known for its garden courtyard. Shah Jahan took refuge here while revolting against his father.
The Jagdish Temple is a large Hindu temple in the middle of Udaipur. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh Ist in 1651 A.D.
Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar Lake is situated in the north of Lake Picholas. It was originally built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1678 AD, but later on reconstructed and extended by Maharana Fateh Singh.
Lake Pichola consists of two islands named as Jag Niwas and the Jag Mandir. This lake is 4 km long and 3 km wide, originally built by Maharana Udai Singh II. In the heart of the lake the Lake Palace stands, which is now converted into a heritage palace hotel. The lake remains fairly shallow even during heavy rains, and gets dry easily in times of severe drought.
