Ujjain is one of the most beautiful city which is located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is an ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River in the Malwa region of central India. It once used to serve as the capital of Avanti and a center of learning. An ancient seat of learning, Ujjain is the place where Lord Krishna, along with Balarama and Sudama, received his education from Maharshi Sandipani. It is also regarded as the Greenwich of Hindu astronomers and astrologers. It is the administrative centre of Ujjain district and Ujjain division. Ujjain is a city of famous king Vikramaditya or great poet Kalidas and is also known for its great cultural and spiritual importance like Varanasi or Benaras. This city is renowned as one of the seven sacred cities, which are called Sapta Puri of the Hindus. This city is famous as one of the four sites which host the famous Kumbh Mela. It is called Simhastha Mela here, a mass pilgrimage which lures large numbers of travelers from all over the country.
The history of Ujjain has a significant value and a historical importance attached to it. In ancient times the city was called Ujjayini. According to Mahabharata epic, Ujjayini was the capital of the Avanti Kingdom. It is also home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines to the god Shiva. According to the History of Ujjain, the city was a major center of mathematical and astronomical research in the 6th and 7th centuries. Brahmagupta, Varahamihira and Bhaskaracharya were the famous mathematicians who worked in the city. The picturesque of Ujjain was invaded by the forces of the Delhi Sultanate led by Iltutmish in 1235. Due to this invasion the city suffered widespread destruction and systematic desecration of temples. After this under the Mughal emperor, Akbar, the city became the capital of Malwa.

Mahakeleshwara Temple is one of the most famous temple located in Ujjain city. This temple of Lord Shiva is devoted to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is built in five levels and decorated with idols of deities like Omkareshwars Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Kartikeya and Shiva Bull Nandi.
Kaliadeh Palace is a beautiful tourist destination which is located on an island in the river Kshipra. This palace has a Persian style of architecture and has been constructed in the year 1458 AD by the renowned Sultans of Mandu. This palace is one of the well known sights of Ujjain that represents the glorious past of the city.
Jantar Mantar is an another place of astronomical importance and star gazers. It was established in the 17th century. Jantar Mantar is derived from the two words, Yantra and Mantra. It is located in the south eastern place of Ujjain and has four monuments.
Gopal Temple is one of the most famous temple located in the city of Ujjain. The temple was built in the 19th century. The chamber of the goddess is decorated with marble and the doors are silver-plated. The temple stands as a specimen of Maratha architecture.
Harsiddhi Temple is also another tourist attraction in Ujjain. The temple has an idol of Annapurna painted in dark vermilion colour between the idols of Mahasaraswati and Mahalaxmi. The two pillars supporting the temple are decorated with lamps and special features of Maratha art.
